Six months ago, on the eve of the St Andrews negotiation of October 2006, I argued in Parliamentary Brief that the impossible —  a deal between Sinn Fein and the DUP — was now no longer that. The reason: that Adams, struggling in the Irish Republic opinion polls, needed the boost of entry into a power-sharing government in the North before the Republic’s June 2007 election.
